Features of Photo Organising Software
Ease of use
When choosing photo organisation software, including Photo Organising Australia, it's important to consider ease of use. A cluttered or confusing interface can deter users from utilising the software effectively. For personal use, a simple app may be all you need, while professionals may require more advanced tools to meet their diverse needs.
Albums and Collections
We often organise our photos to share them, create photo books or make slideshows. This feature also allows us to group our favourite photos or organise them by events. Professional photo organisers use advanced tools such as target collections which can automatically group photos based on custom fields such as flags, ratings, create date or camera model.
Tagging, Keywords, and Face Recognition
We need to organise and manage our photos by sorting and tagging them. We can tag all unwanted photos for quick deletion or rate photos to highlight our favourites. To find specific pictures, we can use keywords like a name or event. Using face recognition can greatly speed up the process of adding a name as a keyword.
Adjust Date Created
When photos are taken using cameras or mobile devices, they include standardised information called metadata. This information can include device/camera settings, date created, location, and owner/copyright details.
Photo management software uses this metadata to organise photos by date created, typically by year. However, sometimes the date created may be incorrect due to reasons such as older devices not supporting this field in their metadata capture, incorrectly set camera date and time, or scanned images setting the date created when the image was scanned. A Professional Digital Photo Organiser can help correct these inconsistencies.
A good photo management application will allow the date-created value to be adjusted or corrected and then written back to the metadata.
Metadata
A photo organisation application should be capable of writing metadata to the file. This allows the file to be searchable in any system not restricted to the current application.
Basic editing tools
Photo management software usually includes basic photo editing tools for cropping, rotating and auto-adjustment of colours.
Sorting/Culling Images
You can filter by Creation Time, Edit Time, Flag, File Name, File Type or File Size.
Other useful features
Automated Tasks
AI-powered processes automate tedious tasks such as identifying people, tagging, searching and retrieving specific images. AI is increasingly used to remove backgrounds or unwanted objects, assisting in fixing red-eye or exposure problems.
Batch processing capabilities
Working with a large number of photos requires photo management software that can handle many photos at once. This software should let users easily add tags and make changes to many photos with just one click. This makes it quicker and easier to work with lots of photos, helping your productivity. Photo Organising Australia offers tools that simplify this process.
File Handling and Renaming
Organising photos in folders by event and date is common for easy searching. Most use a structure like Event, Date, Person, and Location in their file names. Date and event together are popular as it's easier to recall events than dates.
Renaming a photo from IMG00123.jpg to Mary’s 5th Birthday-123.jpg provides some information about the photo without viewing it. Different sources and devices often use unique naming schemes. Having the ability to rename and reorder files allows for a structured hierarchy.
File Conversion
Photos taken from different devices may be in various formats, including JPG, PNG, HEIC, TIFF, or RAW. To save space when uploading to social media sites, we frequently need to convert files. Photo management apps should be able to convert (export) photos into different formats and dimensions.
Multi-platform support
When selecting photo management software, choose one that works with your operating system and devices. If you use Apple or Windows-based platforms, make sure the software is compatible. If you have different devices and operating systems, pick an application that allows you to import photos from all of your devices.
Photo editing tools
You may need more control over the final look of your images, so consider investing in a professional photo editing suite.
RAW format support
Photos are typically in JPG or RAW format. RAW files contain more detail, providing better post-processing capabilities in photo editing software..
Backup Support
After you finish sorting your photos, it's crucial to safeguard them. Your photo organisation system should provide easy access for backing up your photos.
We follow the 321 backup method to guarantee the safety of our photos. This method involves creating three copies, storing them on two different types of media, and keeping one copy offsite. It's essential to always have a local copy of your photos easily accessible.
Since these are your personal photos, it's important to maintain control over them. Cloud solutions can change their terms, cease operations, or make it difficult to download your photos. When using cloud solutions to manage your photos, you might encounter challenges if you decide to relocate your photos, potentially leading to a loss of the organisation you invested a lot of time in establishing.
